From time to time our minds turn to the larger questions of life and
death. For 99% of the time we are focused on day-to-day things and we
play our parts in the family and society. But perhaps 1% of the time
we may wonder about our lives as a whole, or think about the
inevitability of death and what that tells us, or think about the
existence of a life after death or a deeper spiritual connection which
underlies the obvious surface differences between us, or think about
all we have heard about God, and wonder how it applies to us.
I am no guru. I push no answers. I have myself asked many questions
in these areas in life and therefore have some familiarity with them.
At the same time I am perhaps more aware than average of our different
needs and approaches. And therefore, from time to time, I have found
myself being able to be of use in discussing these things with someone
who needs a little time to see what place such things play in her or
his life.
Of course I am going to be less expert than a theologian, rabbi,
priest, imam or leader in any other faith. But for an informal and
non-committing chat it can be an advantage not to be too narrowly
expert. The fellow-pupil can be the best teacher at times.
