Parents

I often seem to find myself re-telling the story of the Ugly Duckling, to make the point that it is not uncommon in human life to feel that our parents are almost a different species from ourselves. The problem is that life does not guarantee that we get the parents that would be most suitable.

Even when we become adults we often seem to retain much of our childhood feelings about our parents. We can continue to feel a need for their approval that, if it is not forthcoming, can be a great handicap It can be hard to know what to do about this.

One difference is the key one of whether the parent involved is dead or not. In the latter case there may be the chance of some improvement in the present relationship. In the former it can be valuable to look back and see things in a perspective that releases us to go forward into the future.

As with most of the headings, though, the details vary enormously from family to family.
