WORK
Memory
Memory is one of those things that we tend to take for granted. Few
of us have ever wondered how to improve it. Even fewer are aware that
the way in which memory works can be very different from person to
person.
For example there are some people who excel at remembering what they
have seen. I remember a student who could call to mind in vivid detail
the pages of her note books. Other people may be totally unable to do
that but have a brain that is somehow amazingly able to remember every
name it hears. Some of us excel at remembering numbers, some tunes,
others football results and so on.
The point of this is that if in a work situation someone finds
themselves having to improve their memory for a special reason, where
do they find help? The problem with books, as far as I can see, is
that they tend to specialise in certain techniques that are very good
for some kinds of minds and certain kinds of tasks, but not for all. I
have found, with my general interest in the human mind and all it is
capable of, that it is not too hard to find specific techniques that
will work for a particular person. The point is that it is important
to build on the natural strengths of their minds with an eye on the
specific thing that is needed. We can therefore ignore approaches that
are excellent if you want to be a professional Stage Mnemonist when
they are inappropriate.
That is the advantage of having a one-to-one consultation. It allows
us to ignore the vast amount of information on the way people work
which are irrelevant to the issue at hand. We can then focus on just
what you want and achieve the maximum result in the minimum time.
