The step from doing a job to standing up in front of a group of
people and talking about it is a big one for many people. There is in
all of us an instinctive surge of adrenaline that comes when there are
many sets of eyes looking straight at us. If we are in control then
the adrenaline feels like a high. We are like actors who love the buzz
of an audience. But if we are not in control then it feels like panic.
It can then trigger one or more of the symptoms of panic: dry mouth,
sweating hands, racing heart, shallow breathing, stammering, trembling
and a mind that is like a chicken when the fox is in the run.
The majority of people who come to me for help with this type of
problem have come wanting hypnosis. It helps a lot. But hypnosis, as
far as I am concerned, is just a particular application of
straightforward principles of how the mind works. And in this kind of
problem it still works best when based on the nature of the particular
person involved. I never take exactly the same approach twice, because
no two people are the same.
Because of my flexibility of approach it is usually quite easy to
use the same understanding of the principles involved to provide a
path to freedom from the anxiety which will give results for anyone.
Indeed my preference is always to teach someone how to use the tools
themselves to do a job, as I feel it is more empowering.
