Offices and shopsWORK

Work is a very large part of many of our lives. It takes an enormous number of different forms: teachers, prison officers, small business owners, accountants, musicians, civil servants… the list is almost endless. Each has its own skills and its own potential problems.

Clearly an outsider cannot know all about the technical skills involved each of these. And yet there are certain things that an outsider can see more clearly just because of the perspective it gives. Furthermore there are many things that can arise in any context. For example it is common to ask if we should try to adapt to a situation, or should look for a new position which would not need so much accommodation. Similar common issues are how do deal with pressures from a boss, or the stresses of a poor organisational structure.

At times I am consulted by someone who owns a business or is high in management. In those cases it is worth noting that my services can reasonably be seen as a worthwhile business expense. Such people have at times told me that it is difficult to confide in someone connected to the business, as they are often “a part of the problem”. It can then be relaxing and refreshing to talk things over in perfect confidence with an intelligent outsider.
